Macs can't run it without emulation either. OpenSkyscraper could be made to run on Mac OSX or Windows 7 x64 natively - which means it's as simple to run as anything else on your computer, like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Already wrote a great explanation why they are doing this, but you should look at other mods/remakes which are trying to do the same. Look at (a Theme Hospital clone), (a XCOM clone), (a Dune 2 clone), (a Rollercoaster Tycoon clone), (a Space Station 13 remake) or (Red Alert clone), they are all great examples of this type of 'cloning'. They are trying to remake the games while using the same gameplay and assets. Most of these game require the original game to work (because of the assets), but they want to expand on the original game. For example: To fix bugs, make it compatible with a modern OS (or also Mac/Linux compatible), multiplayer support or balance the game, make it more accessible and so on.
