As a matter a fact that does not include most of us! This was very disappointing. But then I started thinking, how difficult can it be to build something similar to Windows PE from a Windows XP installation CD-Rom? A quick file compare looked like most of the needed files are on the Windows XP CD-Rom. Only because I thought building this would be easy, I started coding my own builder program. Had I known how hard it would be, I would probably never have started programming PE Builder. This first version (v1.0.0) of PE Builder was released on April 28, 2003.

Yes, version 1 was a very simple, very static, very bad and copyright violating program. And the (very friendly) people at Microsoft had every right to kick my butt. But I learned from it and in May 2003 I started on a second version. In July (three months later) v2 was ready.

Version 2 did not have the problems that version 1 had. The version 2 build engine had its own registry hive builder which was not easy to program and took about 50% of my research and coding time.

It also was dynamic enough that it could build from Windows XP and Server 2003. In v2.0.1 I added a small but very powerful menu program called nu2menu, which was written by my buddy Henk de Jong. The latest 2 version (v2.0.2b) even used a new ISO filesystem called 'ISO-9660:1999 (version 2)' instead of the Joliet extensions. Some non-English versions of Windows XP had filenames longer than the maximum allowed length for Joliet filenames (103 chars). I had to patch the ISO building program (mkisofs.exe) so that the Windows NT bootstrap and setup loader would boot properly. The file and directory names can now be up to 207 characters.

But again this version had something bad. When comparing some INF files they looked too much like the WinPE builder from Microsoft. I had to change the entire INF file layout to use its own format. And on Sep 1, 2003 (almost 6 months after starting) version 3 was ready. After adding plugin support, PE Builder got very popular. You can create pre-defined profiles, that you can select. Microsoft winPE only supports DHCP or fixed settings using winbom.ini. Also there is a plugin (NwDskPe) created by Erwin Veermans that loads the Netware Client on BartPE (IP/IPX). Fileshare - BartPE can start File Sharing support so you can connect to the system through a share.

It is legal to make a 'backup copy' of ANY files from your original Windows XP/2003 media to another media. It is legal to add any other files you wish to the backup media. It is not legal to use a BartPE CD and an installed Windows XP/2003 both at the same time under the same Windows XP/2003 EULA. It is not legal to change any binary files in the process according to the Windows XP/2003 EULA.

This makes 'winlogon' and 'bootscreen' hacks illegal. A BartPE image is (and I quote) 'not a properly licensed WinPE'. This means that if you want to have a licensed WinPE, you cannot use BartPE. However, you can use a BartPE image under the license of the Windows XP/2003 EULA that came with the BartPE XP/2003 source media. I feel that, considering the above, Microsoft cannot say that BartPE is illegal. If you don't break the rules of (3), (4), (5) and you don't make more than one BartPE CD without having more than one Windows XP/2003 license, you can use it any environment. Barts PE Plugins and Information today's date is Saturday, November 26, 2005 i know i should have mentioned this a couple of months ago, but don't hold your breathe waiting for this page to get updates. though this page will always be here in its current form i have completely moved my personal computing life over to the apple macintosh platform. The first week of july 2005, i made this bart's pe page. Then during the first week of august 2005, my windows computer had a complete meltdown ( software that is, not hardware ). So instead of rebuilding my windows computer, i just moved it all over to my iMac, which is something that i had been wanting to do anyway for a year or so.

The ms windows meltdown was the last straw and provided the impetus for me to finally get off my duff and make the switch to apple. And you know, i have no regrets.

I'm fairly new to Bart's PE, it's a wonderful piece of software engineering that enables one to boot a computer, from a cd, into a windows environment. Bart Lagerweij is a genius, and i hope that someday he will be richly rewarded.

That being said, if all you do is download the pe builder program from bart's site, and use it, as is, to burn a bootable cd, all one really gets is a beautiful windows environment, but you can not really do much with it; just like installing windows on a computer for the first time, sure you can boot the computer, but until you spend the next 3 hours installing all of the drivers and other programs, it's not really useful for much. It's the same thing with bart's pe, and that's where all these plugins come in. They allow one to make a bootable cd that is truly useful, from running antivirus software to rescuing data off of dead pc's when windows has crashed and burned. My plugins are pretty simple and basic.

When the word 'registry' is mentioned, i break out in hives and my brain freezes up hard. I know i should seek medical help of some form, but therapy causes my brain to catch on fire, which does help to thaw it out, but bandages can get rather expensive after a while. So i like to keep things simple.

My main reason, for using bart's pe, is to disinfect family and friends' computers from all the malware that exists. If they can not be disinfected and cleaned up, then i need to be able to rescue data off of them. To that end, there are a few plugins made by other people, that i would consider essential. They add basic functionality to the core pe program and give you a more natural windows experience. My disclaimer and due credit. I liked them, they seemed useful, so i listed them here. Hah, and you thought you were done reading!! Well i'm not done rambling yet! This screenshot is my computer specifications. That's right, every time i made a bart cd, i would go upstairs and test it out on my windows98se computer with an AMD K6-2 500MHz with only 192MB RAM. Why do you care? Well, right below, i highly recommend using at least 3 plugins, the ramsize plugin, the setpagefile plugin, and the vbrun plugin.

With ramsize, you can create a RAM disk that is larger than the default of 32MB. I always created a RAM disk that was 128MB in size.

That's 2/3 of my available RAM. I needed to use the RAM disk a lot, and with 128MB, i never worried about running out of room on it. To compensate for using up so much available RAM, the first thing that i would always do is set the pagefiles.sys to my C: drive, using. Since this created a swap file on the C: drive, i never had any problems using two-thrids of my RAM for a RAM disk, and no program ever complained about low virtual memory. It's just very cool is all. The other thing i would like to note is that, for the most part, bart's pe ran pretty smoothly on this computer. With the larger programs, there would be some seconds before the program did load.

But on the whole, the perceived experience, of using a bart's pe bootable disk on this computer, was ok. It did take a while to boot up initially and configure networking, but running the programs was decent and overall not too bad. So what is the moral of the story. Give yourself a heaping big RAM drive, and the first thing that you should do, after bart's pe has finished booting, is to create a swap file ( aka the pagefile.sys ) on the C: drive. the essential plugins according to my simple understanding: download them now, post haste!. ramsize: allows you to set the size of the ramdisk upon first boot ramsize: if possible, make it large. I like 128MB.
